These were the earliest short stories featuring the famous consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and originally appeared in The Strand Magazine in monthly installments from July 1891 to June 1892. The stories are presented in the same order as their original publication, though not based on any internal chronological sequence. The only recurring characters in all twelve tales are Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson, with each story narrated from Watson’s first-person perspective. The collection often highlights and seeks to address social injustices, with Holmes portrayed as a champion of a more equitable form of justice. The stories were very well received by readers and significantly boosted The Strand Magazine’s circulation, allowing Conan Doyle to command higher fees for future works. The first story, “A Scandal in Bohemia,” introduces Irene Adler, a character who, although she appears in only this one story, has become a prominent figure in modern adaptations, frequently depicted as a romantic interest for Holmes. Conan Doyle later selected four stories from this collection for his personal list of favorite Holmes tales, naming “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” as his top choice.
